“Some of the foremost projects in life are beyond the scope of a single human life span. Consequently, fraternal bodies and organizations oversee and perpetuate some of the most significant and meaningful ventures ever embarked upon by humankind. The challenge before us, as individuals, is to determine how to follow in someone else’s footsteps or how to continue unfinished works. We must first understand that all genius does not have to be original. Many worthy undertakings in life are ongoing, and if they are to be maintained, they desperately require our involvement. You and I should therefore search out worthy projects and programs to join. Additionally, we should pursue opportunities to apprentice under a master and learn how to become masters ourselves. Essentially, all skill and knowledge is but one generation away from extinction. If we do not study and learn the wealth of all human proficiencies, they are threatened to be lost forever.”

Kandra, as a college president, I have been entrusted with the unfinished work of six other presidents before me and with the will of tens-of-thousands of college constituents going back to the mid 1920′s. I take this work, this trust, this responsibility very seriously because it is far bigger and greater than me.
